yogaścittavṛttinirodhaḥ || 2 ||
Universal Translation
Yoga is the inhibition of the modifications of the mind.
tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe'vasthānam || 3 ||

Then the Seer abides in his own nature.
vṛttisārūpyamitaratra || 4 ||

At other times the Seer identifies with the modifications.
vṛttayaḥ pañcatayyaḥ kliṣṭākliṣṭāḥ || 5 ||

There are five kinds of modifications, either painful or non-painful.
pramāṇaviparyayavikalpanidrāsmṛtayaḥ || 6 ||

These are right knowledge, indiscrimination, verbal delusion, sleep, and memory.
abhyāsavairāgyābhyāṃ tannirodhaḥ || 12 ||

The control of them is by practice and non-attachment.
tatra sthitau yatno'bhyāsaḥ || 13 ||

Practice is the continuous effort to achieve steadiness of the mind.
sa tu dīrghakālanairantaryasatkārāsevito dṛḍhabhūmiḥ || 14 ||
Universal Translation
Practice becomes firmly grounded when it has been cultivated for a long time, without interruption, and with devotion.
dṛṣṭānuśravikaviṣayavitṛṣṇasya vaśīkārasaṃjñā vairāgyam || 15 ||
Universal Translation
Non-attachment is the consciousness of self-mastery in one who is free from craving for objects seen or heard about.
